Meditation with a Busy Mind

A busy mind can become a doorway into meditation. Thoughts move, and the simple knowing of those thoughts is already present.

You sit down and remember an unfinished task. Soon a conversation from yesterday appears, followed by a plan for tomorrow or a question about whether you are meditating correctly. Noticing this movement gives you somewhere to begin. There is already a recognition that thinking is happening.

What knows this thought?

A thought may appear as words, an image, a memory, or a plan. Another thought follows. You can notice their changing presence, much as you hear sounds arriving and passing. The knowing of experience is available before you have arranged its contents.

Organic meditation invites familiarity with this knowing quality. A quiet mind may be pleasant. A busy mind also offers a doorway into recognition. What is known changes; knowing can be discovered in the experience already here.

The image of sky and clouds can help. Clouds may be thin, dark, or layered. The openness of the sky can be recognized amid their movement. Let the image point you toward your actual experience, and allow the image itself to pass as well.

A short exploration: sound, body, thought

  1. Hear one sound. Let the sound reach you. Notice that hearing is already happening.
  2. Feel one point of support. Your feet may touch the floor, your back may meet the chair, or your hands may rest in your lap. Let breathing find its natural rhythm.
  3. Recognize a thought. When words or an image appear, notice that they are known. A gentle acknowledgement, such as thinking, can be enough.
  4. Rest briefly in knowing. Sound, sensation, and thought are present in the same field of experience. Give them room for a few seconds, then continue with your day.

You can meet this exploration many times in an ordinary day. The principle short moments, many times allows recognition to become familiar through brief encounters, whenever you remember.

When attention becomes absorbed again

A plan may hold your attention until you realize that several minutes have passed. That moment of realizing is a fresh doorway. Feel the support beneath your body, hear a sound, and notice what is being known now.

We can bring gentle intention and allowing: a soft willingness to recognize awareness, together with room for experience to unfold. Breath, movement, or sound may help attention return. Choose a doorway that meets your present experience.

Include the body

Busy thinking may arrive with lifted shoulders, a tight jaw, or an urge to get something finished. These sensations can be included too. The body has a rhythm and a language worth listening to.

You may adjust your seat, open your eyes, or walk while feeling your steps. Familiarity with awareness can grow alongside friendship with the body. There is room to discover the whole of experience gradually.

Bring recognition into ordinary activities

While washing a cup, know the sound of water, the movement of your hands, and a thought about work. Before answering a message, feel your feet and read the words on the screen again. A few seconds can bring meditation close to the life already unfolding.

A question to carry with you is: Within this moving stream of thought, can I recognize that experience is already being known?
