Marga Wismaya: A Path of Meditation and Nonduality

Marga Wismaya is the path I teach through Inner Peace Indonesia, and its name says what it is: marga means path, and wismaya means miracle or wonder. Marga Wismaya is the Path of Miracle, a way of meditation that starts with what you are experiencing right now and moves gently toward recognizing the awareness in which all of it appears. You can begin with it in a first session, and it keeps opening the longer you practice.

The name comes from Javanese, and the path keeps a quiet, practical intimacy with the inner life that lives in ordinary days, while it draws on the contemplative traditions I have studied and practiced. The miracle it points to is close at hand: the plain fact that you are aware at all.

Let us begin with something small. While you read this sentence, a thought will probably pass through: a comment, a memory, a plan for later. Notice that you can see it. The thought comes and goes. Something in you saw it arrive and saw it leave, and that something did not leave with the thought. This simple observation is the doorway, and everything else in Marga Wismaya grows from it.

The three paths of Marga Wismaya

The title of my book Sutra untuk Memasuki Jalan Keajaiban (Entering the Path of Miracle) uses the Indonesian meaning of the name, Jalan Keajaiban. In it, the teaching is laid out as three paths. They work together, each one deepening the others, and in mature practice all three can be present in a single sitting, even in a single breath.

The first path is taking distance, which mostly means watching. Body sensations, thoughts and feelings are allowed to be exactly as they are and are simply watched, without clinging and without pushing away. One image from the book: watching television and slowly learning to recognize the screen, without being swept away by the broadcast. Forgetting is part of the practice. When you get carried off, you notice that too, and come back. Short moments, many times.

The second path is the path of love, also called the path of transformation. Here the view widens. Every breath, every blink, every action of every being is a movement toward happiness and away from suffering. That includes you, the colleague who irritates you, and the stranger on the road. When this becomes visible, understanding grows, and love follows from understanding. The book’s image is a tree that gives shade and turns compost into nourishment. Difficult emotions and old hurts can become material for compassion, and they slowly stop looking like proof that something is wrong with you.

The third path is the light that illuminates itself. Here we gently explore the nature of experience itself. Thoughts, feelings, sounds and sensations are recognized as they are, and turn out to be not as solid as we thought, nothing that can truly be grasped. As this becomes clearer, life feels lighter and more spacious, and meditation becomes a natural resting, without grasping and without pushing away.

Direct and explorative doors

People arrive with very different bodies, histories and questions, so Marga Wismaya does not push everyone through the same gate. For some, a direct pointing to the nature of awareness is the most natural place to begin, and they can learn to rest in it fairly quickly. Others need an explorative route first: the breath, attention, sensing the body, building a felt sense of safety, inquiry, or prayer. Neither route is higher. They meet in the same recognition.

This matters, because recognizing awareness clearly does not mean the nervous system has finished reorganizing itself. You can glimpse the open sky of the mind and still feel your shoulders tighten in a difficult conversation. Both are true at their own level. Tiredness, relationships, work and old patterns are real in how they function, and the ultimate nature of experience remains open and clear. Marga Wismaya holds the two together, so that depth never becomes a way of skipping over your actual life.

Understanding also matures over time. At first the teaching is grasped as an idea. Then it sinks into the body and the feelings. Then it becomes direct realization that gradually permeates everything. At every stage, keep practicing.

Living Marga Wismaya day to day

Most of the practice happens far from the cushion. When you drink, be fully with the drinking. When you eat, be with the eating. When you walk, let your feet kiss the earth. When you are tired, notice tiredness. When there are many thoughts, notice many thoughts. Nothing disqualifies you, because whatever is happening can be the place where you are present.

Emotions are an honest testing ground. On the first path, an emotion is watched without getting tangled in it. On the second, it is transformed into love. On the third, it is seen through and recognized, in its very arising, as transparent light. In none of them is the emotion grabbed or fought. Over time the measure of the path becomes clear: emotions still come, and they are recognized more and more for what they are.

Exploring the path together

If something here feels familiar, or simply interesting, you are welcome to explore it with me. Sessions begin with what you actually need, and the practice is shaped around the person who shows up, new to meditation or long practiced. I offer personal sessions and small group classes, in Bali and online, and you can find them here on WhatsApp.

You can begin through private meditation with Andreas or explore one-to-one nonduality mentorship. Read more about basic goodness, the warmth and openness recognized within this practice.

May this path be of benefit to you and to everyone your life touches.
